Tony Carter, Chair

Tony brings extensive management experience and governance expertise through his recent role as Managing Director of Foodstuffs Auckland and Foodstuffs New Zealand, and previous roles as owner and operator of several Mitre 10 hardware stores, and Managing Director and Chair of Mitre 10. Tony’s directorships include Vector, Air New Zealand, Fisher and Paykel Healthcare and Fletcher Building. Tony is a trained engineer, having completed his Masters degrees in Canterbury and the United Kingdom.


Dr Rick Boven, Director

Rick leads the New Zealand Institute. He was a strategic management consultant for more than 25 years and was the founding partner of the Boston Consulting Group in New Zealand. An Accredited Fellow of the Institute of Directors, Rick’s recent directorships include ASB Bank, Sovereign Insurance, Wellington Drive Technologies, and Simtics. Rick has worked with leading companies in Australia, New Zealand and the U.S.A in a wide range of industries including financial services, industrial distribution, energy, telecommunications, information technology and on-line, transport, manufacturing, and agriculture. He has a Ph.D. in Environment Management from the University of Auckland, a Master of Business Administration from the Australian Graduate School of Management, and a Master of Arts (Psychology) from Victoria University of Wellington. Rick has university teaching experience in psychology, social work, research methodology, business strategy, and managing change. He has publications in social welfare, mathematical psychology, educational sociology, strategic management, business ethics, and economic development.


Catherine Harland, Project Leader

Catherine is the Project Leader at the New Zealand Institute with a background in research, consultancy and public policy in local and central government. She has 15 years experience as an elected local government member within the Auckland region, serving on and chairing major regional and city committees. Catherine has worked in the Ministry of Transport and in the private sector in marketing and administration roles, developing her first career as a professional market researcher. Prior to joining the Institute she worked with AUT University’s Institute of Public Policy and was engaged in consultancy work with the Auckland water industry. Catherine is a Director on the Board of Watercare Services Limited, a Justice of the Peace, and has served on the Auckland Observatory and Planetarium Trust Board for 11 years, five of those as Chair. She has a Master of Business Administration from the University of Otago, a Diploma in Business (Marketing) from the University of Auckland and a BA in political science and sociology from Victoria University of Wellington.


Lillian Grace, Research Associate

Lillian spent six years at Academy Award winning Massive Software where she was involved in every aspect of running the business. Through Massive, Lillian was exposed to the world of international business and the visual effects and hi-tech industries. Her experiences have deepened her passion for improving opportunities and standards of living for all New Zealanders, which led her to join the New Zealand Institute. Prior to joining Massive, Lillian was a secondary school physical education and health teacher at Kaipara College. Lillian has a Bachelor of Physical Education from the University of Otago and a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary) from the Wellington College of Education.


Raquel Murphy, Executive Assistant

Raquel has five years of customer service and administrative experience from within a large SOE and a growing niche manufacturing and exporting firm. Raquel has travelled widely and believes New Zealand is uniquely placed to be a world leader in addressing environmental and social issues. Raquel volunteers outside of work with the New Zealand Red Cross, Greenpeace New Zealand, Amnesty International Aotearoa, and enjoys outdoor pursuits such as tramping and long distance ocean swimming. Raquel has a Bachelor of Communication Studies from the University of Waikato and is studying part-time towards a Graduate Diploma in Information Systems and Technology for Business. Raquel manages the operational systems which facilitate the Institute's work, including executive support to Rick Boven, accounts administration, events management, communication activities and assistance in maintaining business intelligence.
