We’re right behind you: A proposed New Zealand approach to emissions reduction

By David Skilling & Danielle Boven - 24 October 2007

Overview

New Zealand has a significant economic exposure to climate change. The nature and size of this exposure depend on the attitudes and actions of global commerce, firms and governments.

There is significant uncertainty as to how the international environment will develop over the coming decades, and therefore as to the most appropriate strategy for New Zealand to adopt.

In response, this report recommends that New Zealand adopt a fast follower approach in which it acts to reduce its emissions in line with the action taken by other countries. New Zealand's commitment to reduce its emissions should therefore be framed in a contingent manner.
