So far yet so close: Connecting New Zealand to the global economy

By David Skilling & Danielle Boven - 12 Mar 2007

Overview

As a physically remote country, the quality of New Zealand's international supply chain has a significant impact on the ability of New Zealand firms to compete in global markets.

Unfortunately, despite significant progress in transport and communications technology over the past century, it still takes longer and costs more to ship goods and people to these markets.

This report identifies three priority areas in this regard; strengthening New Zealand's international air and shipping links; adopting business models in which the production activity of New Zealand firms is located closer to the end-market; and inventing a virtual supply chain to enable New Zealand firms to export services using communication technology.
