Improving social outcomes is an important goal of the New Zealand Institute. One of the Top 10 issues identified for New Zealand is ‘Can New Zealand improve outcomes for youth in ways that lead to a successful multicultural society?’
The starting point for this project is the observation that youth in New Zealand are more disadvantaged than youth in other OECD countries on average. This results in harm directly experienced by the affected youth as well as societal costs imposed indirectly on others.
The New Zealand Institute's contribution to identifying ways to improve social outcomes, specifically for youth, are collected in this project.
The first discussion paper in this project, 'More ladders, fewer snakes', describes the disadvantage experienced by youth in New Zealand and identifies important causes, it then offers two proposals to materially improve outcomes for youth.
